Somboon Legacy Foudation Elephants
100% Hands OFF Elephants Sanctuary

Malee, Kammoon and their good friend Somboon (who passed away) all met each other 20 years ago when they were purchased by the same owner. They spent all their time together and were nicknamed the three musketeers.

Kammoon is a name for people in Isaan (north-eastern) language.

She is estimated to be over 60-years-old.

To our knowledge she has not had any babies. She came from Isaan and was rented out by her owner, mainly to be a begging elephant.

Kammoon weighs approximately 3500 kilograms.

Kammoon is the shorter but fatter elephant of the two, and you will always spot her eating. She is a brave and independent female, and is a great support for Malee.

As Kammoon is getting older, she is starting to take little daytime naps. Although Kammoon does still have her teeth, we have adapted her diet because her digestion is not as good as it once was.

Malee’s name translates to Jasmin.

She was logging in Thailand when a log hit her and she fractured her left rear leg. Her owner found her in Kanchanaburi province.

Like Kammoon she is estimated to be over 60-years-old. Malee has had babies in the past.

She is approximately 2450 kilograms.

Malee is tall and slender, because her legs still hurts sometimes, she can’t gain too much weight. She is gentle and relies on Kammoon for support.

Malee has lost all of her teeth, and therefore has problems digesting her food and absorbing the nutrients. Therefore we have adapted her diet. All of the grass she eats is chopped with a machine, watermelons are chopped in small pieces and so are banana trees. This way we do what we can to prevent her from getting constipated.
